About the role
We’re looking for an innovative Head of M&A based in Sydney to work closely with our CEO.
You’ll take ownership of AMP’s acquisition pipeline and help shape our inorganic growth strategy—from identifying and approaching promising software businesses through to evaluation, due diligence, negotiation and completion.
This is a hands-on role. You’ll personally build founder and broker relationships, assess opportunities, develop investment cases and keep transactions moving. You’ll need to balance strategic thinking with a willingness to get into the detail, move quickly and make sound judgements with incomplete information.
We’re looking for a builder who can create a repeatable M&A engine, not someone who only manages advisers or oversees deals from a distance.
Your area of ownership will cover:
- M&A strategy: Translating AMP’s growth priorities into clear acquisition themes and target criteria.
- Deal origination: Building a strong pipeline through market research, direct outreach and relationships.
- Opportunity assessment: Evaluating strategic fit, product quality, financial performance and growth potential.
- Deal execution: Leading valuation, structuring, due diligence, negotiation and completion.
- Founder relationships: Establishing AMP as a credible, thoughtful and founder-friendly buyer.
- M&A processes: Building practical systems, playbooks and reporting that allow AMP’s acquisition activity to scale.
What you’ll do
- Develop and continuously refine AMP’s acquisition strategy and target criteria.
- Map software, SaaS, Shopify and eCommerce markets to identify attractive opportunities.
- Build direct relationships with founders, business owners, brokers, advisers and investors.
- Proactively source opportunities rather than relying only on businesses already for sale.
- Lead initial founder conversations and quickly understand the fundamentals of each business.
- Assess strategic fit, product strength, market position, financial performance and key risks.
- Build and review valuation models, deal structures and return scenarios.
- Prepare clear investment recommendations for AMP’s leadership and Board.
- Lead commercial, financial, legal, product, technology and people due diligence.
- Coordinate internal teams and external advisers while keeping transactions moving.
- Support the negotiation of offers, letters of intent and transaction documents.
- Develop practical transition and integration plans with AMP’s functional leaders.
- Track pipeline health, deal progress and acquisition outcomes.
- Use AI, automation and data tools to improve sourcing, analysis and execution.
About you:
- You have relevant experience across M&A, corporate development, private equity, investment banking or an acquisitive technology business. We care more about your judgement and track record than a specific number of years.
- You have led meaningful parts of transactions from sourcing or initial evaluation through to completion.
- You understand software or SaaS business models and can identify what makes a technology business attractive, defensible and scalable.
- You are entrepreneurial, commercially curious and motivated by creating opportunities—not only analysing those presented to you.
- You are comfortable speaking directly with founders, building trust and handling sensitive conversations.
- You combine strong financial and analytical skills with practical commercial judgement.
- You are proactive and persistent, but thoughtful and respectful in how you build relationships.
- You can switch between strategy, outreach, modelling, diligence and execution as priorities change.
- You are comfortable operating without a large team, established playbook or perfect information.
- You bring energy, resilience, integrity and a strong bias towards action.
- You take ownership of outcomes and follow work through to completion.
Why join us?
- Work at the intersection of SaaS + eCommerce with a global, remote-first team
- Direct impact: your strategies will touch thousands of Shopify merchants
- Fast-growing business with the agility of a startup, backed by scale-up traction
- Other benefits include flexible work locations & productivity allowance/budget to help set up a great work space, competitive compensation, annual offsites and comprehensive health insurance.
We are committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace where everyone is treated with respect and dignity, irrespective of their race, gender, ethnicity, or any other characteristic.
