About EatClub

At EatClub, we believe restaurants and bars are the beating heart of every city’s culture. Whether it's discovering a hidden gem, grabbing a late-night takeaway, or meeting friends for a drink, our mission is simple: help the hospitality industry thrive through smart, powerful tech.

Our platform helps over 2 million customers discover top restaurants and access real-time deals that save them up to 50% off the bill. We empower more than 4,000 venues to fill empty tables, increase foot traffic, and maximise revenue.

Recently ranked #11 on the 2025 Deloitte Tech Fast 50! Now is an exciting time to join our team. Initially co-founded by Marco Pierre White and leaders in the food tech scene, we’re now a 150+ person scaleup that’s growing fast and making waves in the industry.

Why You’ll Love Working With Us

  • Be the architect of our legal function not a caretaker of a legacy system
  • Work directly with the CEO and leadership team on high-impact strategic decisions
  • Operate at the centre of growth, governance, and commercial execution
  • Build frameworks that scale across Australia and internationally
  • Join a high-growth company (150+ employees across AU & UK), still early in its journey
  • This is a rare opportunity to design something foundational and see your work shape how the company grows for years to come.

A Day-in-a-Life of our General Counsel

As our first General Counsel, you won’t be maintaining a legacy function; you’ll be a key player in building one from scratch.

You’ll act as a strategic partner to the CEO, CFO and leadership team, enabling growth while managing risk intelligently. Some days you’ll be advising on a board matter or supporting a fundraising process. Other days you’ll be negotiating a complex commercial agreement, shaping compliance frameworks, or building scalable contract playbooks.

You’ll balance commercial velocity with thoughtful governance. You won’t just identify risk, you’ll help navigate it pragmatically. You’ll translate complex legal issues into clear business decisions that drive momentum without compromising long-term resilience.

If you thrive in ambiguity, enjoy building systems from zero, and like being both strategic and hands-on, you’ll thrive here.

On Any Given Week, You Will Be

  • Advising the CEO, CFO and ELT on legal trade-offs tied to commercial growth
  • Reviewing and negotiating customer, supplier, and partnership agreements
  • Supporting board governance and preparing materials for strategic decisions
  • Building scalable contract templates and approval workflows
  • Partnering with our Head of People on employment matters, ESOP documentation, employee and industrial relations, and risk mitigation
  • Identifying regulatory obligations and shaping compliance frameworks
  • Designing internal policies (delegations, code of conduct, compliance frameworks)
  • Managing and optimising relationships with external counsel
  • Translating complex legal risks into clear, actionable business decisions

Some weeks will lean heavily strategic (fundraising, structuring, governance). Others will require you to be deeply operational (contracts, policies, systems). Both matter here.

Type of projects you’ll be working on at EatClub…

As our first in-house legal team member, you’ll design and embed the legal foundations that enable sustainable growth, not slow it down.

Building the Legal Function from the Ground Up

  • Designing and implementing the company’s first scalable legal operating model
  • Establishing governance structures that support international expansion
  • Creating a practical, business-aligned risk management framework
  • Selecting and implementing legal tech, contract workflow, or automation tools
  • Developing privacy, data protection, and consumer compliance frameworks
  • Supporting future capital raises and investor negotiations
  • You will work closely with the CFO and leadership team to ensure governance enables growth rather than constrains it.

Commercial & Corporate Operations

  • Building a contract lifecycle management framework to reduce turnaround time and risk exposure
  • Overseeing key commercial negotiations and strategic partnerships
  • Advising leadership on regulatory and structural implications of business decisions

Employment & Workplace Law

  • Designing, drafting, and maintaining employment contracts, contractor agreements, and termination documentation compliant with Australian and UK law
  • Overseeing the legal aspects of the full employee lifecycle (hiring, performance management, restructuring, termination)
  • Providing pragmatic advice on complex employee relations matters, investigations, grievances, and disciplinary action
  • Managing employment disputes and litigation in collaboration with external counsel
  • Monitoring legislative developments across employment and WHS and translating them into business-ready policies
  • Designing and delivering legal training to People & Culture and leadership teams

Executive & Equity Compensation

Advising on the legal and tax implications of employee share schemes (ESOP)

Structuring executive compensation arrangements

Ensuring compliance with Australian corporate and tax regulations related to equity programs

What Makes This Role Different

This is not a “review contracts” role.

You will build systems, influence executive decision-making, and shape how legal supports strategy at every stage of growth.

You won’t inherit a mature legal department. You’ll create one.

You have...

  • Admission to practice in Australia (required)
  • 5+ years PQE
  • Strong commercial law background
  • Experience in a top-tier or mid-tier firm and/or high-growth company
  • Experience supporting capital raises and board governance
  • Comfort operating autonomously as a sole legal function

It would be extra awesome if you also had…

  • Experience in a scale-up or marketplace environment
  • Exposure to international expansion
  • Experience designing legal tech systems or workflow automation

You are…

  • Commercially minded - you don’t just say “no,” you help find a path forward
  • Calm and clear in complexity
  • Comfortable prioritising in ambiguity
  • Systems-oriented and you build frameworks, not just fix problems
  • Able to balance speed with long-term resilience
  • A strong cross-functional communicator who can translate legal nuance into business clarity

If you do a good job…

Legal becomes a strategic growth enabler, not a reactive checkpoint.

The CEO and leadership team rely on you for clear judgment, pragmatic risk navigation, and structured decision-making. The Board trusts that governance is robust, transparent, and scalable. Teams across the business move faster because they have clarity, strong frameworks, and well-designed guardrails.

Within 12 Months

  • Legal risk is proactively identified and managed before it becomes disruptive
  • Contracts move efficiently through scalable templates and clear approval pathways
  • Governance processes are structured, consistent, and investor-ready
  • Fundraising and strategic initiatives are supported by robust financial and legal frameworks
  • Compliance systems scale confidently as the company expands internationally
  • External counsel is used strategically, not reactively

Your impact is visible in how confidently the business makes decisions.

Maybe this role is not for you if….

  • You’re uncomfortable being the sole legal leader and primary decision-maker
  • You prefer operating within established legal departments
  • You prefer highly structured environments with clearly defined boundaries and processes
  • You focus primarily on identifying risk rather than helping the business navigate it
  • You need perfect information before making recommendations
  • You prefer technical depth without regular exposure to commercial trade-offs
  • You’re looking for a narrow specialist remit rather than broad ownership across commercial, governance, employment, and compliance

This role requires comfort with ambiguity, accountability, and pragmatic judgement.

If this sounds like you, apply now and help us shape the future of hospitality tech.
